Network Marketing: The Prospecting Kool-Aid

Prospecting Kool-AidOne of the first mistakes that we tend to make as Network Marketers is pushing our companies product on our prospects. Now don’t get me wrong the product and company are very important aspects of the opportunity.

You want people to join a solid company with a unique product. Even though the product should not be the main point of your business it still is important.

However, lets be honest. No one comes running to you saying…”hey it’s my life long dream to sell or market some form of super juice”. Doesn’t sound familiar does it? Probably because no one comes around asking that question when they are looking at a Network Marketing opportunity.

What you do get is people wanting to make more money, wanting to have more time to themselves and for their family, people looking for freedom from a J.O.B.

What does that tell you? It tells me that maybe that’s what you need to be talking to your prospects about. Something like…”Hey Bob, let me help you and train you how you can go about making some extra income to help with the bills”. Or “Jane, let me show you how you can quit your job.” Or hey let me teach you something that will help make you self sufficient in starting and running your business.

That definitely sounds more like what people are looking for rather than the Super Kool-Aid or Batman Vitamins that most of us are pushing. Don’t let your prospects see you as the Jim Jones of Network Marketing. They really DON’T want your Kool-Aid.

So it’s pretty simple, have a solid company/opportunity behind of you but be sure to give people what they are looking for.

People are looking for leaders and teachers.

Plain and simple. So make sure you’re out there growing as a leader, no one ever said that a leader has to know all of the answers. I sure don’t expect my mentors to know the answer to every single question that I have, but I do expect that they care enough to make a best effort to help me find the answer.

Make sure that you are offering prospects solutions to their problems. At the end of the day their fate is in their hands and not yours, however you should still offer them all possibilities for them to grow their business and help them to grow into a leader as well. Remember, growing a team of 10 leaders is much more powerful than growing a team of 100 followers.

  2. Brian,

Great points, I was trying to explain that
to someone the other day. I am not sure if they actually got my point.

The bottom line is they are looking for a solution and that is why we need to invest in ourselves and people will not care what product you are selling. They will want to be a duplication of you.

    Have a great day Brian!

Hey Tommy, great point. A solution to someone’s problem will always trump any product that you are pushing. Duplication will become key once you teach them what they need to know.

Thanks for stopping by my friend.

  3. Brian,

Very creative twist to your article! I like the Kool-Aid theme!

It’s unfortunate that most network marketers are taught the wrong thing from their sponsor or upline…Lead with the business. This is a relationship marketing business first and foremost. Building the relationship first allows a person to determine the problem and then offer the solution.

    Great article! Thanks!

Thanks Bridgette, Kool Aid is always cool, LOL.

Relationships are key to any business and they are what you should concentrate on at all times. We need to always remember that.

  4. Hi Brian,
The good old Kool-Aid Test! You are right on the money with this post. I have seen many people brainwashed a la Jim Jones style into believing that if they drink the magic Kool Aid of Company X or Company Y, all their dreams will come true, and they will be happy ever after. Sad that this continues to happen, but humans are humans after all! Your point about building trust through value — not manipulation — is absolutely correct.

Hey Mary Lou, happy to have you stop by. You are correct we are all human beings and we will take the comfortable road more often than not. Time to remember that we as individuals are more important than any company.

Always good to have you stop by.

  6. Brian,

Excellent points. Learning how to offer value and brand yourself is the ONLY way to have real and lasting success in network marketing especially online.

People need to be more open minded and accept that instead of hammering away with the business opportunity from the front end.

    Cheers,
